What’s Next For Vergil Ortiz

Vergil Ortiz turned bro three and a half years ago he has amassed a perfect record of 15-0 scoring a knockout in each and every fight. He has mega fights in the future with fellow Dallas, Texans Errol Spence Jr and Maurice Hooker. The 21-year old mega prospect has aspirations of fighting both men and says it has to happen for Dallas. Ortiz was out 2018 Prospect and with fellow proteges Teofemo Lopez and Shakur Stevenson having captured world titles, Ortiz stands alone as the best of the young fighters to not yet capture a world title. At 21 Ortiz has emerged as top 10 welterweight and already ahs solid knockout victories over the likes of Antonio Orozco, Brad Solomon, and Mauricio Herrera. 2019 was a breakthrough year for the hard-hitting Texan and 2020 could become a championship year for Ortiz. According to multiple sources, Ortiz will return to the ring on March 28th in the Forum in Inglewood, California.

Ortiz is in an interesting spot he was signed by Golden Boy right out of the amateurs and is tied up with that Promotional Company and will likely be fighting predominately on DAZN, unfortunately for the young upstart, most of the divisions talent is on the PBC side of the street so making a fight with those guys could be a difficult task. However, the good news is that Ortiz is ranked number two by the WBO behind the number one ranked Danny Garcia. Here are the five best and realistic fights that Ortiz should take that can get him in line for a world title shot before the end of 2020:

1.

Danny Garcia- Swift is a superstar a prover drawer in both New York and Las Vegas and is the name the Vergil Ortiz needs to elevate him from upstart to the real deal. Fortunately for Ortiz,, who is ranked #2 by the WBO Garcia is ranked number one by the same organization. A win over a two-division former world champ on a big stage would do wonders for Ortiz. It was also very sellable as the next chapter of Puerto Rico vs Mexico rivalry. Golden Boy should absolutely put all the pressure in the world on the WBO to call a final eliminator between the two top-ranked 147-pounders. With the winner getting a mandatory shot against Terence Crawford If Garcia opted not to take the fight the option would go to the WBO’s number three ranked contender.

Sergey Lipinets- The former IBF 150-Pound champ is ranked #3 by the WBO if Garcia opted to not take a hypothetical final eliminator against Ortiz. The option would be given to Lipinets. The Russian would be a tremendous challenge for the Texas prospect, however, its one Ortiz needs to pass and should be able. Ortiz is bigger stronger, the harder puncher and has Robert Garcia in his corner who trained his little brother Mikey Garcia when he beat Lipinets.

Kell Brook – If neither of those PBC fighters are up for the challenge, a fight with Eddie Hearn promoted Kell Brook could and should be made. Its a barometer fight for Ortiz, it wasn’t that long ago that fellow Texan Errol Spence stopped the Special One and had a difficult time in doing so. If Ortiz could stop Brook as well it would show that the 21-year-old is on the same projection as Errol Spence

Luis Collazo- There is still something left in the Collazo tank, a former world champ who has been in with everyone certainly deserves one last shot and one last payday. He can still sell tickets in New York City and Golden Boy would be wise to try out their next superstar in that market, the nation’s largest market. Like the Garcia fight, it could be sold as a Puerto Rico vs Mexico rivalry scrap.

Egidijus Kavaliauska The mean machine looked impressive in being stopped by the pound for pound king Terence Crawford in his most recent outing. Being stuck on Top Rank he is going to have a tough time landing a top welterweight and one of those names coming over to fight on ESPN is highly unlikely.
