Prospect of the Month: Floyd Schofield III

In a month that featured more high-level prospects in big televised fights than you can shake a stick at. However, one man’s performance stood head and shoulders above the field. “Kid Austin” Floyd Scofield III performed at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, which made the boxing world take notice. The 19-year-old Austin, Texas, native dismantled former world champion Rodrigo Guerrero over five one-sided rounds to move his record to 11-0 (9) putting the lightweight and super featherweight divisions on notice and taking home our Prospect of the Month Award for July.

Schofield knew Vergil Ortiz may be the main event, but he knew plenty of eyes were on him. People wanted to see what “Kid Austin” was all about. He did not disappoint. Putting on a show, Kid Austin got to work early. Dominating the opening two rounds with his quick lateral movement. a sharp jab and laser-like right hands. He scored a third-round knockdown. Scored a second knockdown another in the fourth when Schofield hammered Guerrero with a straight right along the ropes, staying on the attack and unleashing a barrage of power shots that sent Guerrero to the canvas with less than 0:30 to go in the round. Guerrero was able to beat the count, but the writing was on the wall. Schofield stayed on the assault in the fifth, battering Guerrero with well-placed and lightning-quick combinations. It was more than enough to force Guerrero’s corner to stop the fight after the fifth round. Giving Schofield the 5th round TKO victory.

Between 19-year-old Schofield, 22-year-old Bam Rodriguez, and 17-year-old Jesus “Panterita” Martinez. The Texas Take Over of boxing seems to be moving smoothly into the next generation. There’s no shortage of hype around Schofield, former 140-pound world champ and fellow Texan Mario Barrios has completed Kid Austin’s incredible speed, Oscar De La Hoya noted he was a star and has recently signed him to a co-promotional deal and co-promoter Cameron Davies of Davies entertainment when asked how far kid Schofield go laughed and said he could be one of the best ever. There’s that kind of hype and talent around the 19-year-old who will headline a Golden Boy live card in October and in 2023 will look to be moved along quickly and towards a world title. Given his incredible combination of hand speed, precision punching, power, and ring IQ. It’s not unreasonable to think he could replace Bam as the youngest world champion in the sport in the relatively near future.
